A Legacy on the Rise: South Carolina State University Real Estate Foundation Unveils Visionary Growth Through the Washington Point Development
Orangeburg, SC — The South Carolina State University Real Estate Foundation (SCSU REF) proudly announces the advancement of the Washington Point Development, an exclusive, lakefront initiative that stands as one of the most transformative projects in the University’s modern history.
Rooted in a mission to expand opportunity, elevate student life, and invigorate the Orangeburg community, the Foundation is positioning Washington Point as a model of excellence in university-based development—one that merges learning, living, and leadership with innovation and purpose.
Building More Than Structures—Building Legacy
The South Carolina State University Real Estate Foundation was established to lease, manage, and develop university properties, including student housing, faculty residences, and administrative spaces that serve the greater good of the institution.
Today, that mission has evolved into something even more powerful: a commitment to create sustainable, inspiring environments that nurture success, strengthen community ties, and drive economic renewal across Orangeburg.
“Washington Point reflects a promise to our students and our community,” said a spokesperson for the Foundation. “It is not just about constructing buildings—it is about creating spaces that inspire learning, spark innovation, and sustain legacy.”
Washington Point: A Vision of Progress
Set against Orangeburg’s scenic lakefront, the Washington Point Development is envisioned as a dynamic, mixed-use destination that unites academic excellence with lifestyle innovation.
Plans call for:
-
-
-
- Modern residential housing for students, faculty, and staff;
- Green spaces and walking paths designed for wellness, recreation, and connection;
- Collaborative learning and innovation hubs that inspire creativity; and
- Retail and gathering spaces that foster partnership between the University and the local community.

With its forward-thinking design and strategic location, Washington Point will serve as both a gateway to campus and a symbol of SCSU’s enduring impact as South Carolina’s only public, land-grant, historically Black university.
“This project embodies our commitment to growth, sustainability, and student success,” said Alexander Conyers, President of South Carolina State University. “It demonstrates how thoughtful development can transform our campus and empower our city for generations to come.”
Expanding the University’s Real Estate Footprint
The SCSU Real Estate Foundation currently manages and leases several cornerstone properties that support student success and university operations, including:
-
- University Village
- Campus Corner and University Corner
- Frederick Street Residences
- Chestnut Street and Lovell Street Properties
- Russell Street Inn
Each of these sites plays a vital role in strengthening the University’s infrastructure, improving access to high-quality housing, and fostering community engagement. Together, they form an integrated real estate ecosystem that supports the University’s strategic growth plan and the broader revitalization of Orangeburg.
A Mission of Purpose and Partnership
The Foundation’s vision extends beyond campus borders. Through collaborative planning and sound financial stewardship, it seeks to enhance the region’s livability, attract new economic opportunities, and ensure that every property under its management contributes to the University’s legacy of excellence and access.
“Our work is guided by a single belief,” a Foundation representative noted. “When we invest in students, faculty, and community, we invest in the future of South Carolina.”
